The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program approves ITTO’s 140 Hour Online TEFL TESOL Course!
The JET Program
The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program is a Japanese government initiative that brings college (university) graduates-mostly native speakers of English-to Japan as Assistant Language Teachers and Sports Education Advisors in Japanese public schools or as Coordinators for International Relations in local governments and boards of education. Participants currently come from a total of 65 countries.
The main focus of the program is on English language teaching, which is why having ITTO’s 140 Hour Online TEFL TESOL Certificate is crucial to your JET Program application!
This is one of the world’s largest international exchange programs and has an excellent reputation in Japan as well as abroad. The objective also, is to strengthen international relations between Japan and other countries by enabling local authorities to employ people from other countries. Since 1987, over 60,000 participants from around the world have participated, gaining valuable work experience abroad and exploring a rich and historical culture.
The Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR) administers the JET Program in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and local government organizations.
Salary and Benefits
In addition to developing Japanese language skills, this Program pays a little better than the average language school in Japan.
Your salary is ¥300,000 Yen (approximately $2,523 USD) per month on a one-year contract or annually it is ¥3,600,000 Yen or $30,286 USD.
This is quite enough to live comfortably and it increases every year should you decide to stay.
You will get 10 national holidays off plus another 10-20 personal days of vacation.
JET will help you find and arrange your housing but will not pay the rent. Nevertheless, some JET participants receive some form of housing assistance from their contracting organizations.
Return air travel to Japan is provided on condition of fulfilling the terms of contract.
During the JET Program
Application for participation in the JET Program is a long and competitive process. However, the rewards of being chosen are well worth the effort. A one-year appointment on the JET Program could be just what you are looking for to broaden your horizons and take a different step in life.
JET participants are placed in contracting organizations throughout Japan. You may be placed in a big city or in a small village of just a few hundred inhabitants. JET participants live and work in all of the different climate zones that Japan has to offer, be it the cool summers and pristine winters of the northern shores of Hokkaido or the tropical islands of Okinawa. In a country of contradictions, as famous for manmade feats of engineering and design as it is lauded for the close ties of its people with nature, JET participants bring their own diversity into play, sharing their cultural backgrounds from over 40 different countries. The only thing that can be said to apply to all JET participants is that the JET Program offers you the opportunity to grow and shape yourself in an environment that will provide a unique set of challenges and chances to learn about another culture through immersion.
